The Ransoms and Murders
December 19,1931 Sheriff Calvin LeRoy Kelly is killed
The FBI states that Alvin killed Kelly,but Alvin claims it was Fred Barker and Bill Weaver,and that he wasn't even present at the time of Kelly's murder.
Took place at Davidson Motor Company Garage in Missouri.
$1,200 reward was placed on Fred and Alvin.
March,1932 Bodies of two women,Margaret Perry and Sadie Carmacher,are found in Alvin's burned out vehicle
It's believed that the two women were planning to tip police off on the gang's whereabouts.
The FBI never investigated this murder as a connection to the Barker-Karpis gang.
Alvin stated that a friend of his had taken his vehicle,and that he had nothing to do with the murders.
The women were found in the burned out vehicle near Balsam Lake.
April 26,1932 A.W.Dunlop's body is found on the shores of Lake Frensted near Webster,Wisconsin
It's believed he was murdered for tipping off law enforcement.
The FBI states that a woman's glove was found beside the body (implying that Ma Barker may have killed him).
Alvin says that Harry Sawyer killed Dunlop,returning a favor.
Dunlop was murdered the day before he was found.
August 13,1932 Attorney J.Earl Smith's body is found
It's believed that either Alvin or Fred Barker killed Smith,when he failed to get one of the Barker brothers out of a prison sentence.
His body was found at the Indian Hills Country Club just north of Tulsa,Kansas
December 16,1932 Patrolmen Ira Leon Evans and Leo Gorski are killed by fellow gang member,Lawrence De Vol.
An unknown civilian was also killed,but by Fred Barker;it was stated that the civilian was taking down the getaway car's license plate when he was shot and killed.
All were killed by machine guns at the Third Northwestern bank in Minneapolis,Minnesota.
June 15,1933 William Hamm of Theodore Hamm's Brewery Company in St.Paul,Minnesota is kidnapped.
Ransom was paid ($100,000),but none of the money has ever been found.
Hamm was released alive on June 19,1933.
It's stated that Jack Peifer came up with the idea to kidnap Hamm.
August 30,1933 Police officer,Leo Pavlak,is killed
Fred Barker shot and killed Pavlak with a Thompson submachine gun.
He was killed during a payroll robbery that was on its way to the Stockyard's National bank in St.Paul,Minnesota.
September 22,1933 Police officer,Miles A.Cunningham,is killed by gunfire
Cunningham was investigating a car accident when he was killed;one of the vehicles involved in the accident was that of the Barker-Karpis gang,containing members who had just robbed a bank.
January 17,1934 Edward G.Bremer,a Minnesota president banker,is kidnapped
Ransom is paid ($200,000),and the bills were marked.
Bremer was released alive on February 7,1934
It's believed that Harry Sawyer came up with the idea to kidnap Bremer.
March 20,1934 fellow gang member,George Zeigler,is killed
He was killed by shotgun blasts to the face,outside a saloon in Cicero,Illinois.
Joseph P.Moran,an underground doctor used by members of the gang,was shot to death
He was killed by either Fred or Doc Barker.It's believed he was killed because he was "running his mouth to whores."
The FBI claims that they found Moran's body on September 26,1935 on the shores of Crystal Beach in Ontario,but Alvin states that Moran's body was buried in a lime pit in Michigan.
January 6,1935 William B.Harrison is killed in Ontarioville,Illinois.
He is killed by a fellow member of the Barker-Karpis gang.
